Tips on how to take great photos of your kids at home

Have you bought yourself a great digital camera to take photos at home? Not sure where to start? Want to take some really great photos of the kids in between professional ones? Here are a few good tips that will take your photos from ok to wow!
1. Get down on their level – This is probably the most important tip when it comes to taking great photos of kids. They’ll likely feel uncomfortable if you’re towering above them and won’t be themselves. But if you get down on their level, they’ll feel more comfortable and you’ll be able to capture their natural personality in your photos.
2. Use props – Kids are often more cooperative when there are props involved. Give them something to play with or hold onto, even a messy piece of fruit could make for a great photo, and it will help keep them still long enough for you to snap a few pictures. This works well if you’re lucky enough to live near the beach like us on the Gold Coast. A kid in the sand, finding sea shells, building a sandcastle, or running along the water with the dog. Perfect photo moments.
3. Be patient – I can’t stress this enough! When I have kids in the studio, and their parents are there also, telling them to just smile, it never works. Often, I politely ask the parents to go into my front room just so the kids can relax. I’m patient enough to wait til they get their wiggles out and can just be themselves. Kids are unpredictable creatures, so it’s important to be patient when taking photos of them. If you can wait patiently for the perfect moment, you will more than likely get an amazing shot.
