A good, or even bad Google review for this Gold Coast photographer is welcoming.
When I first started back again in 2018, in my last attempt as a small business, I found out how important it was to have a Google review.
I was new to this.
Previously, my reviews were clients telling friends and that was it. I would have some written testimonials from wedding clients that I had in my BIG portfolio case. This was the olden days, before Instagram, so when people wanted to see previous work I brought this along to see them. A massive big zippered up portfolio full of prints, along with sample wedding albums, written testimonials, and a framed image or canvas. This is how I would meet clients.
Back to the present modern world, this seems like an absolute lifetime ago. So, in order to gain a little bit of respect from prospective clients, a google review is super important. I started off slow, building relationships up with clients, then asking ever so nicely for a review. 9 times out of 10 they wouldn’t do it. It felt deflating. Should have just asked for a written one on paper! I did get video testimonials for the ones that never did a google review.
I have slowly built up both my reviews and confidence in asking for them, over the years, and now have over 50 5-star reviews. I’m pretty proud of myself for that.
To the ONE bad review. I was left fuming for a long time over this one. It was a favour, to a friend, which left me even more bitter. Not sure how to respond, I left it for a longer time than I should have. Being so angry, I’m glad I didn’t automatically respond.
But, as any great businesswoman, I rose above it. Learnt a very important lesson, and wrote a comeback I was sure was professional and acceptable to anyone reading it.
This taught me a LOT and helped me focus even more on the customer service and education side of my business. I quickly found out that it’s not just about taking great photos anymore.
I now ensure that all clients working with me understand all aspects of the shoot, and afterwards. They have all their questions answered so no one is left wondering what to expect. Just like in an actual photo shoot, you’re never left wondering.
So I welcome all honest reviews, it helps keep me and my business on track. If you’re not happy with something, I didn’t educate you properly, and that’s on me.
